The Position: The Assistant Professor, Chicano Studies will provide leadership and participate in developing key ideas and strategies to promote a successful Chicano Studies program, including assisting the department chair in creating appropriate certificate or degree programs in the discipline of Chicano
Studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a variety of courses in Chicano Studies, including:
· The Chicano in the History of the United States · The Chicano in the Political System of the United States · Introduction to Chicano Studies · The History of Mexico · Introduction to Sociology of the Chicano
The instructor will also assist in planning and developing the department's curricula and student learning objectives, and updating course textbooks and the Course Outline of Record for Chicano Studies. Additionally, the instructor will provide academic advising to students, serve as an advisor to student
clubs and organizations, and participate fully in department academic and cultural events and activities, including community outreach.
The Department: The Multicultural Studies Department is committed to offering and developing diverse and balanced curricula in all of its ethnic studies disciplines to promote self-discovery, social awareness, and appreciation of the cultural diversity of all major ethnic groups in America. The course
offerings are designed to expand students' awareness and understanding of the rich and unique histories and realities that have shaped our American experience. The core of each course offers a variety of rich and unique histories and realities that promote the development of tolerance and mutual
self-respect. The central curricula in the Multicultural Studies Department are in the academic disciplines of Africana Studies, Asian Studies, Chicano Studies, Judaic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and Multicultural Studies. The department offers two certificate programs to students: Africana Studies and a

Qualifications:
Minimum:
1. Must meet one of the sets of qualifications listed under a) through c) below. All candidates must meet qualification d):
a) Master's degree in Chicano Studies.
b) Master's degree in ethnic studies, history, multicultural studies, or sociology with upper division and/or graduate coursework in at least one of the other constituent disciplines, including Chicano Studies.
c) A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of either a) or b) above. Candidates who do not possess the specific minimum qualifications as stated above, which includes degrees that have not been awarded at the time of application, must complete the Equivalency
Qualifications Form that is included with the application.
d) Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds in a community college.
Preferred:
· Successful experience teaching Chicano Studies courses such as the history of the Chicano in the United States and the Chicano in the United States political, social, or cultural system.
· Demonstrated academic excellence in research and scholarship in Mexican and Chicano Studies.
· Effective writing and publication in academic subjects relevant to student learning in education and Chicano Studies.
· Experience working with student clubs and/or organizations.
· Community service and outreach and/or community relations experience.
· Experience teaching distance learning courses.
· Demonstrated excellence in applying innovative teaching methods and strategies in the classroom.
· Evidence of a teaching philosophy and curriculum that is student-centered and stimulates student learning outcomes.
· Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in Chicano Studies and its educational program.
· The ability to work effectively, constructively, and professionally with students, colleagues, and others.
· Commitment to a student learning-centered college.
Terms of Employment: This is a full-time, 10-month-per-year tenure-track position. Teaching assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes at the San Marcos campus and/or off-campus locations as part of contract responsibilities, as well as distance education classes. Full-time faculty are
expected to participate fully in departmental activities and college governance and hold regular office hours.
Salary and Benefits: Starting salary range: $52,464.44 - $82,078.16 annually. An annual stipend of $1,278.73 shall be paid to any faculty member who has an earned Doctorate. Academic training and teaching experience will form the basis for salary placement. Palomar offers an array of exceptional, fully-paid

Estimated value of these employer-paid benefits is approximately $20,200 annually. All full-time faculty are enrolled in STRS (State Teachers Retirement System).
