What's this I hear about an Activist IRC chatroom?

OK, here are the directions to a real chat room:

If anyone is interested in meeting in a Chat room, I have set one up on a smaller net which has some cool server admins. Anyway, here are the directions:

HOW TO ACCESS THE ACTIVIST SAN DIEGO CHAT ROOM

Via Your Web Browser:

1. Go to the ENTRY PAGE (big) or ENTRY PAGE (small), where a box appears asking "Do you want to install jIRC applet by JPilot software company?" Click OK.

4. To post, type message at the bottom of screen, then hit "enter".

5. Please introduce yourself as a new member on your first visit. I will be signed in as scooby (or some varient of that). If i have "afk" attached to my name, that means I am Away From Keys at the time, but say something and I will try and pop in to chat back with you ASAP...

For more advanced users, who use IRC-Client Software:

1. PC users go HERE; Mac users go HERE.

2. Follow directions for downloading and installing free IRC-client software.

3. In set-up, the server is "Funnet.Org" and the channel is "#activistsandiego".

We have a new chatroom we are trying out and would like to get some feedback from our users.

Here are the instructions:

HOW TO ACCESS THE 'NEW, NEW' ACTIVIST SAN DIEGO CHAT ROOM

Via Your Web Browser:

1. Go to the SMALL PAGE , or BIG PAGE where a box appears asking "Do you want to install jIRC applet by JPilot software company?" Click OK. You will have to do this every time you visit unless you check the box to trust this certificate (or something similar).

You are now in the chatroom. See the hints at the bottom of the page so you don't have to keep refering back to this page. Smile

2. To post, type your message at the bottom of the screen, then press "enter".

3. Please introduce yourself as a new member on your first visit. I am almost always signed in as scooby (or some varient of that). If i have "afk" attached to my name, that means I am Away From Keys at the time, but say something and I will try and pop in to chat back with you ASAP...

4. Some cool things you can do with this chatroom (notice the drop down menus at the bottom of the page... they do stuff) :

You can insert emoticons in the same manner they are inserted on the forums, such as:

. There are a limited number installed, so check the pulldown menus at the top of the page to try them out. I am able to install more if anyone is interested in that...
Doubleclick a username to private-chat them (View profile currently does not work, and may never...)
Emoting: Typing in

"/ me (but without the space) waves hello"
will display action: /me waves hello. You can also choose one from the Action menu at the top of the page. More choices will be added soon...
Changing colors: To change the color of your text when it is displayed in the main window, use the color boxes just to the right of the B Button (which, btw, is a BOLD button. Clicking it merely toggles it on or off. Not required for each time you "speak", as your text will stay Bold until you click it again.
Sounds: We have a few sounds! Type /s sound_name to play it. The available sound_name options are: yes, no, food, ohyea, and yahoo (eg: /s yahoo) More can be added if you want. Just let me know!

5. Clicking on the Config button gives you some options to fill in (changes are not required, but can be done):

In box titled "Real Name", replace "San Diego Activist" with your own name (this is optional).
You can replace the "Nick Name" but it won't change unless you disconnect and reconnect, but the best way to do it is by typing

/nick NEW_NICK
where NEW_NICK is the new nickname you want.
You can change the channel or server by changing them in the dropdowns but, again, that will only take effect if you "Disconnect" then "Connect" to the server.
Click "Cancel", which takes you back into the chat room.

I have just updated this so that you are not required to be logged into this site. If things get out of hand we will look at changing that back.

The software is now registered btw... You should not be seeing that annoying message about telling the webmaster to register it anymore...

I also got the "style" working in there, so it is no longer a white background. Also moved the dropdowns and smilies to the bottom of the page. I think that is a better location for them...

Or you can click the link up in the header of the page called "Chatroom" and that will pop a new window (turn off your pop-up killer or you will never see it...) Just click "Yes" to the security pop-up (it is safe, just needed to install the Java part) and you are in! Introduce yourself or change your nickname by typing

/nick NEW_NICK

where NEW_NICK is your new nickname.

Also, there are more hints at the bottom of the chat room page... And we have sounds!!!!

It has been very lonely in there, so I am hardly ever there.... If you are interested in hanging there, we can re-activate it quite easily. You will need an IRC handle (nickname) on the Funnet network. I can help you set it up if you are interested...
